One of the most popular pranayama techniques is called "Alternate Nostril Breathing" or "Nadi Shodhana." This technique involves using the right hand to alternate closing off one nostril while breathing in and out through the other. Here are the steps to practice Nadi Shodhana:
Sit in a comfortable seated position with a straight spine
Use the right thumb to close off the right nostril
Inhale deeply through the left nostril
Use the right ring finger to close off the left nostril and release the thumb from the right nostril
Exhale through the right nostril
Inhale through the right nostril
Use the thumb to close off the right nostril and release the finger from the left nostril
Exhale through the left nostril
Repeat the cycle for several minutes, continuing to alternate nostrils with each inhale and exhale
It is important to start slowly and build up the duration of practice as you become more comfortable with the technique. Always keep in mind to breathe naturally and if you feel any discomfort or dizziness, stop the practice and rest.
Pranayama can be very beneficial in improving breathing efficiency, reducing stress and anxiety, and promoting a sense of calm and relaxation. It is also beneficial for people with respiratory issues like Asthma, COPD, and others. Consult with a healthcare professional before starting any pranayama technique, especially if you have any medical conditions or are pregnant.
